Case Study 6: Samsung: Tracking Semiconductor Manufacturing
__________________________________________________________________________________
Purpose: Supply Chain Management
Relevant Department: Procurement
Geospatial data is about objects, events, or phenomena that have a location on the surface of the earth. It can assist corporations in understanding what is happening to and on the earth so that they can (i) make better financial and operational decisions, (ii) better understand their competitive landscape and (iii) better manage risk.
Examples include; supply chain monitoring, real time alerts of facility anomalies, production monitoring (track workforce trends and production levels) and monitoring sustainability.
Samsung’s Pyeongtaek campus is a $30bn semiconductor plant in South Korea. The plant also introduces large additional capacity for DAM and NAND memory chips. Production monitoring is critical for industry competitors such as Micron, SK Hynix and Toshiba. Orbital Insight utilized geospatial data, including satellite images and IoT devices to detect
Geolocation analysis can also be used to detect baseline workforce trends and anomalies eg looking at days that are one standard deviation greater than the 60-day mean. The analysis reveals a series of downtime shifts, such as obvious Korean holidays. However, a closer inspection of weekends and public holidays revealed a shift from a 6-day to a 5-day work week which was a leading indicator of curtailment in production in mid 2018.
Monitoring the plant gave competitors key insights into the supply, and therefore pricing, of DAM and RAND memory chips.
Key takeaway. Monitoring production volumes and supply chain anomalies can assist corporates in managing supply chain risks and better understand their competitive landscape.

Case Study 7: R&D: Using Patent Data to Identify the Competitive Landscape in Green Transportation Technology
__________________________________________________________________________________
Purpose: Market/Competitive Intelligence, Product Development
Relevant Department: Product, Sales
In a technology oriented economy, intellectual property assets have become a significant driver for business growth.
PatentSight is a leading patent data and software vendor that evaluates all worldwide patents using its scientifically developed methodology, the Patent Asset IndexTM.. The vendor analyzes the innovation strength of a corporate’s patents using its trademark patent index. The analysis looks at (i) Technological RelevanceTM ie an evaluation of technological importance, (ii) Market CoverageTM, being the protected market size, and (iii) Competitive ImpactTM of the patent, which is the technological relevance by the market coverage.
In 2013, the European and US Patent Office jointly launched a new patent class (Y02) that covers technologies which control, reduce or prevent emissions of greenhouse gases and allow adapting to adverse effects of climate change.
An analysis of patents in the automobile sector gives key insights into who the leading players are in green technology. The analysis shows US and Asian OEMs invest significantly more in the development of sustainable transportation technologies than their European counterparts. BYD and Fiat Chrysler have the highest average quality of patents with Toyota holding the largest portfolio of patents.
Key takeaway. Product development teams can gain valuable competitive intelligence insights by analyzing technology fields with patent portfolios. Corporates are also using patent analysis to discover new areas where existing technology could be utilized to enter new development areas unrelated to their core business.

Case Study 8: Online Search Data Used To Understand Consumer Trends And Predict Under Ameur Revenue
__________________________________________________________________________________
Purpose: Customer Insights, Market/Competitive Intelligence, Product Development
Relevant Department: Marketing, Product, Sales
The renewed consumer interest in sports apparel could see Under Armor show an improvement in performance. The Monthly Sportswear Index signaled a bottom for Under Armor as they were heavily weighted to consumer apparel, rather than footwear. The Under Armor Search Index tracks Google search data on the Under Armor brand, which correlates to revenue.
There are many external factors which influence company performance and volatility in financial markets, currency movements, consumer confidence and changing environmental conditions.
External data can be a key input in understanding these factors.
In March 2018, Eagle Alpha used Google search data to analyze trends in apparel and footwear categories and their impact on Under Armour. The data pointed to a recovery in consumer interest in sports apparel since bottoming in February 2017. In contrast, data on consumer interest in related footwear continued to struggle.
Key takeaway. Using online search data, corporates can understand consumer trends and therefore predict the success of product launches or product categories. This use case can also be applied to predict the traction and revenues of competitors .

Challenges Working with External Data & Eagle Alpha’s Solutions
__________________________________________________________________________________
Transforming unstructured data into actionable insights can be arduous, however, due to advances in open source platforms, data-ecosystems and the rise of third-party data consultants, this process is getting easier. Thus, the earlier your organization starts to invest in research and development, the more competitive and relevant your company will be in this rapidly changing digital landscape.
Key Challenges Our Corporate Clients Encounter When Working With Data. External datasets can be leveraged by several departments within corporates, however discovering the datasets most relevant to the various departments across the corporate is a key challenge. Many companies do not have the in-house data science capability to work with external data or to prove the value from the data. The table below summarizes some of the key challenges our corporate clients encounter when working with data.
A 2019 paper published by Deloitte, outlined challenges such as (i) the complex data-provider market, (ii) negotiating purchase and liability terms and (iii) managing data-provider relationships. The longer it takes to work through these challenges, the less time available to react to market trends and external events with agility.
New technologies and methods solve problems that could not be solved before but at the same time inadvertently create challenges for which good solutions need to be found.
Top Challenges Faced By Corporates
Challenge
Description
Inertia to Change
Change and transitioning away from what has been seen as successful to date (heuristic decision making) to a more objective and data-driven culture is difficult. Inertia and lack of imagination are a challenge.
Dataset discovery
The data-provider market is complex and a sizable one, making it difficult to identify the right data sources and partners.
Dataset prioritization
There are tens of providers from each of the external data categories, finding the dataset that gives a corporate the insights it is searching for can be challenging.
Quality screening
Assessing data quality and accuracy is a key technical challenge. Third party data can be full of inaccuracies and corporates may also struggle to deal with inconsistencies between external and internal data. Data cleaning and formatting is time-consuming.
In-House Resources
Many corporates do not have the in-house resources to work with external data and evidence value from it. Data engineering and data science hires are a significant people cost. Storing and cataloging data in an accessible manner can require updating internal data focused information management processes and capabilities.
Dataset Costs & Legal
External data spending is new for many procurement teams. Developing an external data budget and understanding the value of external datasets in terms of pricing is challenging. Negotiating the acquisition of data can be arduous, often involving lengthy risk and legal agreements of vendor contracts and licensing agreements.
