- The prehistory
__________________________________________________________________________________
In June 2020, the UB Bochum was awarded the contract to cooperate with the RiffReporter Masterclass Science Journalism 2020. [1] As a library that is active in a variety of ways in the area of public relations and especially social media, the topic of the year was “Journalism in the library “, of particular appeal to us.
As a result, our library’s partners were selected and the joint work began in October of that year with initial discussions and getting to know each other, which would only get better as we worked together.
Here is my impression of this eventful journey together and its learning effects for our library.

2.1 The RiffReporter and the Masterclass [2] . The Science Journalism Masterclass is a program funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation, which has been supporting selected journalists in developing new journalistic formats since 2014 under the direction of Christian Schwägerl. New ways and methods should be tested in order to clearly convey important topics using good journalism and to discuss them in lively formats. The masterclass is also a place for meetings, networking and exchange.
In 2020, RiffReporter – the cooperative for independent journalism took over the organization of the science journalism master class and dedicated itself to the topic “Journalism in the library”.
RiffReporter has over a hundred freelance journalists who offer texts on the topics of environment, science, technology, society and international topics on the common platform www.riffreporter.de. RiffReporters stand for fairness, independence and factuality. RiffReporter does not only pursue the transfer of knowledge by offering online texts. The exchange between journalists and readers should also be strengthened at events. Immediately after its founding, RiffReporter eG began cooperating with several libraries, including the Berlin Central and State Library, the Munich City Library and the Hamburg Book Halls. Like libraries, journalists also have the goal of bringing together people, media, knowledge and participation in democratic discourse. Therefore, RiffReporter would like to promote dialogue and participation in cooperation with libraries in the 2020/21 master class.
Events are intended to promote debate, provide food for thought, and impart knowledge and journalistic working methods. For this purpose, the Masterclass fellows develop live formats that they implement at and with the partner libraries assigned to them.
Twelve fellows were selected who will test and carry out various topics and formats in eleven projects. [3]

2.2 The “Into Therapy” project. As the title suggests, the topic of psychotherapy is at the center of the project proposal by the two science journalists Lisbeth Schröder and Corinna Hartmann. Her primary goal was to remove taboos about mental illness and therapy. In addition to the communication measures implemented jointly with the UB Bochum, a very well-attended online conference was implemented as the core of the cooperation project in April 2021. [1]

3. “When someone goes on a journey…”
__________________________________________________________________________________
The first discussions began a journey for the colleagues and departments involved in our library, which culminated in the online conference mentioned above. The questions that needed to be clarified were diverse, starting with the adjustments to the originally planned face-to-face format that were necessary due to the current pandemic situation. As a library with a lively and established knowledge of exhibitions and events [1], we saw great potential in an in-person event. This is especially true since our two partners were very concerned about the involvement of the non-university public given the topic they chose. In order to enable the project to be completed within the planned time frame, an online event was rescheduled. This decision meant that the online conference coincided with the founding of the new research and treatment center for mental health at the Ruhr University Bochum [ 2] . The UB contributed research training for the subject of psychology to the conference, which gave us the opportunity to present the resources and services available in our company.
First, however, it was necessary to determine the requirements, expectations and assumptions of both project partners – our journalistic partners and our own -, to determine which goals were particularly important to each other and to discuss how we could work synergistically towards achieving these goals. During the course of the project it became apparent repeatedly that the partners had different assumptions and expectations. This was one of the challenges of the project, but at the same time it contributed significantly to the learning effects that our library should gain from the project.
The UB Bochum brought its social media teams (Facebook, You Tube, Instagram) and the public relations department into the cooperation and supplemented the postings on the Instagram account of the two RiffReporter fellows with their own posts on their channels. This was done in order to publicize the planned conference among visitors to the UB channels. During the preparation of this parallel public relations work, it became apparent that the library’s suggestion of enriching the project-related social media posts with library-specific information was not immediately obvious to the two journalists. On the other hand, the participation of the public in the conference was of central importance in the eyes of our partners – a target group that the UB Bochum also takes into account, but which is not as much of its focus as the needs of the campus and the university members.
Through these and other communication processes, the journalists also learned what is a natural part of our everyday work, namely that libraries have central information resources and are experienced mediators in the university structure. We put together information for our partners about the services and resources that the University Library has available for the subject of psychology, helped them to orientate themselves in the university structures, pointed out central research areas and the university’s own advisory services, and established contacts with central contact persons the administration and event management at the Ruhr University Bochum and opened up the university’s communication channels for reporting on the project.
Last but not least, this also made us aware of our own resources and – if Anglicism is permitted – resoucefulness in psychology and far beyond.
The journey from the start of the project to the final online conference held one or two surprises for the partners involved – the journalists and the librarians – and challenged both to rethink what they take for granted and taken for granted and thus also offered the chance to become aware of these things again. Both journalists and librarians work with information, are entrusted with communicating it and enabling them to critically examine it. And it is definitely an adventure to experience how a partner from another country takes on these tasks.

YES! Building Bridges
Research-based learning
for young adults in the USA and UK
(ZBW) The ZBW – Leibniz Information Center for Economics ( www.zbw.eu ) receives the BMBF funding award “Raising the Profile of Education and Science Diplomacy” from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the concept of YES! – Building Bridges. With the funding of 100,000 euros, the ZBW will start a test pilot with seven schools from the UK and the USA from 2021 promote cross-border exchange on global economic and social issues.
“YES! – Building Bridges” relies on research-oriented learning. Young adults from the UK and the USA gain insight into different empirical methods and can apply them independently. This creates a connection between theory and practice and the young adults learn scientific working techniques.
With the help of the YES! concept, the ZBW creates a framework that allows young adults to enter into political discourse across national borders on a science-based basis about concrete solutions to global challenges. This creates lasting partnerships between young adults in both countries and the research institutes involved, which last beyond the YES! project. The core of the project is the development of concrete, evidence-based solutions that allow young adults to advise on politics at a very high level at a European, national and regional level, personally or through position papers, to make clear recommendations for action and to discuss them on an equal footing with politicians . Green Building
Life cycle assessment and life cycle
cost analysis in sustainable building
(IRB) Sustainable building (Green Building) is one of the most important current trends in the construction and real estate industry. The Fraunhofer Information Center for Space and Construction IRB hosts the online specialist seminar “Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle – Cost Analysis in Sustainable Building”. The seminar will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on July 13th, 14th and 15th, 2021. The aim is to be able to use the life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis tools immediately after the online seminar using examples.
In the public sector, new office and administrative buildings are generally subject to the guidelines and the rating system for sustainable construction for federal buildings (BNB). Therefore, everyone involved in construction should know about the most important certification systems (e.g. DGNB, BNB) and also be able to use individual methods to optimize their own projects.
The online seminar shows how the evaluation approach of sustainable construction can be used to control and optimize the construction process, with the focus being on cost analysis.
Participants learn the basics of life cycle assessment for buildings. Using practical examples, they can acquire the skills required to prepare life cycle assessments.
All examples are implemented together with the participants in Microsoft Excel. The resulting tables can later be easily adapted to your own projects. Program at: www.irb.fraunhofer.de/ events
