The Library of Things in Bochum
A successful cooperation within the city society
By Meheddiz Gürle
Rent instead of buying! The fact that in many libraries in Germany, in addition to classic media, drills and other everyday objects have been available for some time now, it is nothing new, but it always causes astonishment. The Library of Things is a global movement within the sharing economy and finds classic providers or cooperation partners for this service in libraries. This article tells the story of the Library of Things in Bochum.

Even the longest journey begins with the first step.
_____________________________________________________
At the end of 2019, Dr. Najine Ameli founded the non-profit company “Phase 4 Institute”, from which the Bib der Dinge Bochum emerged. The start of the corona pandemic delayed the development and search for suitable cooperation partners. At the beginning of 2021, Dr. Ameli approached the Bochum city library and asked whether there was interest in a cooperation for a library of things. The interest was more than there.
The Langendreer branch library in Bochum was selected as the first library in Bochum to launch the test balloon of a library of things in Bochum. There were two reasons for this: Firstly, there was already personal contact between Dr. Ameli and the branch library manager, Ms. Grimberg, as Dr. Ameli had worked in the ZDI network (Future through Innovation) and the Langendreer branch library contained a ZDI laboratory. Secondly, the central library should also become part of the network after a successful test run.
After a cooperation agreement was concluded, the six-month test phase began. How reliable was the cooperation between the partners? Did the loan and return of the items work? What was the response from the workforce and users? After the test phase, in which these questions were answered satisfactorily, the next step followed. Since summer 2021, the Library of Things service has also been offered in the Central Library.

The privileged situation in Bochum
_____________________________________________________
While in most cases the libraries themselves offer smaller or larger areas with a Library of Things, the city library is in a privileged situation due to the existing Bib der Dinge association. The central library and the first of six branch libraries (the rest will follow in the medium term) serve as centrally located collection points with a contingent of opening hours that the association could not have made possible. The club’s main location is a 15-minute drive from the center at Auf dem Anger 1, which happens to be in direct visual contact with Ruhr-Park Bochum. A temple of consumption and a temple of sustainability vis a vis. A beautiful symbolism!

The modalities
_____________________________________________________
The 1,547 items currently available can be researched online on the clearly laid out Bib der Dinge page and picked up directly at the main location at Auf dem Anger 1 or ordered to one of the locations in the two libraries. Delivery and collection to the library locations cost three euros each. To use it, an account must be created, which can be easily done online. In addition, a usage fee must be paid. Various pay groups are offered. There is a wide range from the cheapest option, the reduced monthly subscription of 7.50 euros, to the annual promotional subscription of 149 euros. Borrowed items can be renewed once online and again after consultation. Bib der Dinge employees are at the two library locations once a week and provide further information to interested citizens that goes beyond the basic information provided by the employees.

Advantages of the cooperation for the city library and for the Bib der Dinge eV
_____________________________________________________
- The city library does not have to worry about fees, reminders or maintaining user data.
- A few selected items will be presented at both library locations. This hardly takes up any space. This would be different if we had to store all the items ourselves.
- We had no acquisition costs.
- We would have set up a library of things in 2022. Instead, we can now benefit from a cooperation with an existing institution and support it!

Advantages of the cooperation for the Bib der Dinge eV
_____________________________________________________
- The Bib der Dinge reaches a much larger audience through the two library locations.
- Thanks to the city library’s relatively high level of manpower and women’s power, opening hours were set up at both library locations that go beyond the staffing capabilities of the Bib der Dinge at the main location.
- The library employees are available as multipliers for the Library of Things and thus also serve as ambassadors for the project.
- We reach potential new users for the Library of Things, but also for the library’s classic services through word of mouth, training, class tours, cooperation with daycare centers and other measures.

view in the future
_____________________________________________________
The usage fee for the Bib der Dinge is high compared to an annual fee for a library card. However, customers who have found their way to the Bib der Dinge are extremely satisfied. However, we would like to reduce the annual fee. However, the club is currently not self-supporting. The club’s staffing levels are also quite thin. These are challenges that both partners will tackle together. Personnel support from the city library is planned as part of joint workshops and projects.
Meanwhile, the reach of the Bib der Dinge is continually increasing. Additional library locations are being developed in Bochum. The first cooperation requests from neighboring public libraries have been received. A repair café at the Ruhr University-Bochum was won as a new partner. At the main location of the Bib der Dinge, workshops are offered with these main topics: 3D printing, sewing and textile work, screen printing, wood workshop, bicycle workshop and a small research laboratory. The Bib of Things therefore also contains properties of a makerspace. Especially with a view to the upcoming House of Knowledge in Bochum (new construction of the central library with a VHS and market hall in one building), such joint workshops are ideal for trying out new offerings. In this way, important experiences are now being collected that will be taken into the new house.
In the long term, every public library will have a library of things, perhaps specialized in certain subject areas and in a network with other libraries. The 17 sustainability goals of the United Nations Agenda 2030 have arrived in many communities and their libraries and encourage action. Libraries, both public and academic, can act as role models and lead the way. Libraries are highly regarded by citizens, in science and politics and can have a lasting impact more easily than other institutions. This is a pound that libraries should use. This is particularly true in the current period of upheaval with the fight against a never-ending pandemic and the need for economic transformation in order to successfully embark on the path to climate neutrality. This crisis is also full of opportunities.
An old saying goes that even the longest journey begins with the first step. We took this first step in Bochum. When will yours follow?

Potsdam Conference for National Cyber Security 2022
How well
prepared is Germany against cyber attacks?
(HPI) Cyber attacks on authorities, organizations and companies worldwide are causing immense damage – the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, rapid digitalization and increased work from home are creating further attack surfaces and new cyber threats. Public institutions and companies are increasingly concerned about the issue of IT security.
At the 8th Potsdam Conference for National CyberSecurity of the Hasso Plattner Institute on June 22nd and 23rd, 2022, the heads of the most important German security authorities will present the current cybersecurity situation and discuss it with top representatives of leading IT companies, science and civil society new threats and risks as well as the necessary next steps.
“Cybersecurity is a central social concern. With our conference, we would like to bring the topic even more into public awareness and onto the political agenda and help ensure that the relevant actors act together,” says HPI Director Professor Christoph Meinel. After a two-year break, he is particularly looking forward to the important personal exchange on current developments and challenges.

ConTech 2022: Call for Speakers
The secrets of transformation
from chaos to clarity
(ConTech) ConTech 2022 will be taking place on the 29th & 30th November as a hybrid event, both in person and virtually. We are excited to be opening our call for speakers with the option of submitting based on either being onsite or online.
ConTech 2022 will look at Culture, Product, Content and Data, and the ‘from’ to ‘too’ journey that they all take. It is time to ask questions, whether the answer is what is wanted or not, whether it is thought to be ignorant or not, to an ‘expert’ or to a ‘hidden hero’. ConTech creates a platform for all those discussions and insights to take place.
ConTech 2022 will deliver an exceptional conference with thought leadership, practical tools, case studies and stories of successful transformation.
Due to the level curation of the program by our chair team and ambassadors our speaker slots are highly sought after. The sessions will be a mixture of inspiring keynotes, thought leadership and evidence backed success stories.
